I want to start off by saying we all have pores, and they play a vital role in our skin health...so let's drop the pore shaming and start embracing them! Pores are actually the openings of hair follicles, each one contains a sebaceous gland, which produces your skin’s oils.The size of your pores depends primarily on your genes, and your skin type. Naturally, dry skin tends to "appear" poreless, while oily skin often has more-visible pores. BOTH skin types are beautiful!
Several other factors can affect pore size. Dead skin cells and trapped sebum—which, put together, form a pimple—can stretch out pores. UV rays can also weaken the collagen that supports pores and keeps them tight, so they can also make pores look bigger. Similarly, the collagen loss that comes naturally with aging can increase the appearance of pore size. This is just one of the many reasons we supplement with collagen daily.
I'm not here to tell you how to make your pores disappear like those glass skin videos on youtube, but there are things you can do to minimize the appearance of your pores.
So let's focus on the positive, and start loving our pores!
Here are 5 Skin Care Tips To Help Clean, Unclog and Minimize Pores:
1. Face steaming. If you've ever given yourself a face steam before you already know this tip is super-effective! The truth is we can't open and close our pores as they don't have muscles...However, steaming the skin can help loosen up underlying debris, making blackheads easier to release. Steaming causes the skin to sweat which expels toxins, therefore, leaving the pores clean. Clean pores are happy pores :)
Tip: follow your steam with an ice treatment to contract the pores and tighten them (I highly recommend doing this before putting on makeup for a goddess complexion).
2.Don't over-exfoliate. I get it, exfoliating the skin is super-satisfying but when you over -exfoliate you're actually causing more damage to the skin. When the skin gets over-exfoliated the pores will naturally produce more sebum to protect itself…which means blocked pores. It's important to be gentle with the skin as its very precious! It's important to pick your face tools wisely, we highly recommend avoiding scraping...ouch!I love using our BFF tool daily, as its a non-abrasive form of exfoliation and is safe to use daily. I like to do a deeper exfoliation once a week with a peel mask containing AHA's...don't worry this type of at-home peel is super safe and isn't as scary as it sounds. AHA's (alpha hydroxyl acids) help unstick the glue that holds dead skin together without being abrasive. My fav at-home peel mask is the Derma E Overnight Peel.
3.Skincare. Following a proper skincare routine will help keep the pores clean and prevent them from looking enlarged. I cleanse every day with our BFF Tool which uses sonic vibrations to help pull dirt deep from within the pores. I follow with clean, non- comedogenic products that won't clog pores. When your skin is properly cleaned, hydrated and balanced your pores won’t need to make extra oils and this will prevent your pores from looking enlarged.
Ingredients to look out for:
AHA'S =help exfoliate to safely remove dead surface skin cells.
hyaluronic acid = hydrate without greasiness.
Bakuchiol/retinol = increases cell turnover, thus exfoliating the pore and making them appear smaller.
4.Don't let the skin get dry. This is obviously easier said than done, but when the skin is dry it loses elasticity and the pores will produce more oils to basically try and save themselves! However, when the skin produces more oils pores appear larger. Our favorite ingredient to look out for when dealing with dry skin is hyaluronic acid. We love this ingredient because it's light and doesn’t clog pores. Hyaluronic acid is also a humectant, which is a category of skin care ingredients that are hygroscopic, meaning they draw moisture from their surroundings. Humectants are often found in water-based moisturizers, serums, and other leave-on skin care products because of their ability to help boost hydration for all skin types, which is especially beneficial for dry, dehydrated skin. 5.Avoid sugar. You're sweet enough already hehe! But what does sugar have to do with pore size? Sugar spikes the body's insulin levels, which leads to inflammation and breakouts. Sugar also affects our hormones by converting the sugar we eat to glucose which then makes insulin levels rise. Insulin is a hormone produced in the pancreas which regulates the amount of sugar in the blood. When insulin levels spike this is directly linked to the receptors that are connected to the pores (knowledge bombs, I know). This signals the pores to produce more oils…thus causing them to get larger. When the pores fill with oil it's much easier for them to fill with gunk and dirt which makes you break out more.
how to help reduce sugar from your diet:
don’t drink soda and juices.
don't add sugar to your coffee, if you can't deal use stevia.
replace sugary snacks with fresh fruit.
