Let's chat about armpit detoxing and the not-so-fun part of transitioning to a natural deodorant. It's not talked about often, but we feel its something to really consider and be prepared for.
It's common for people to experience worse-than-normal odor when transitioning to naturals... a.k.a NO NATURAL DEODORANT WORKS FOR ME, I GIVE UP!
Please don't give up!!! There is hope, you're just experiencing the not so fun but AMAZING results from detoxing the armpits.
There's no scientific research that confirms exactly why, but there are many hypotheses. One is that the armpit's natural microbiome is disrupted by conventional underarm products, so it needs time to readjust. Another is that weeks after switching deodorants are a major detox period, especially for regular antiperspirant users.
I'll never forget my transition period when I decided to make the switch. Let's just say I had no idea I was about to go through a detox period and smell way worse! I remember having to tell my co-workers "I'm trying a new deodorant today...sorry in advance", and having to go to the washroom mid shift to wash my pits. Luckily I worked at a spa and there were abundant amounts of face cloths and body wash.
Antiperspirants and deodorants tend to contain chemicals that can lead to hormone disruption. These include triclosan, parabens, propylene glycol, and formaldehyde. Let’s be real, hormones can be a nuisance at the best of times, without your deodorant making things more complicated.
Let's also talk about aluminum, a neurotoxin, as the most common active ingredient to block pores of our skin to prevent us from perspiring.
HUH! Our armpits are meant to sweat...its one of our bodies main functions to release toxins from our system! For that reason, many people (including myself) visit saunas and steam rooms.
Fun Fact: The chemical reaction of our sweat and the bacteria living on our skin is what actually causes the stinky smell...so it makes perfect sense to detox the pits and get rid of dead skin cells and access bacteria.
But you know what's worse than smelling a bit musky sometimes? Alzheimer's and breast cancer, both of which have been linked to the same aluminum compounds found in antiperspirants.
Keep in mind our armpits are in close proximity to the lymph nodes and breast tissue.
There has also been a lot of speculation if using these type of deodorants are one of the reasons we’re seeing so many cases of breast cancer. I personally, don’t take my chances and will never use an antiperspirant again.
The best way to switch to natural is to clean your armpits from all those toxic chemicals and give them a break (for everyone's sake, please do this when you're staying home).
Even if you don’t think you need a detox, you probably do. Plus it’s so easy and quick to do, you have nothing to lose. You’ll notice that after doing the detox your armpits will, in fact, smell better and won’t get as stinky at the end of the day.
Keep in mind It can take up to 30 days for your body to regulate itself, though for some people the detox stage is shorter.
How to Detox your Armpits:
1. Throw away your conventional antiperspirant or deodorant containing nasty ingredients mentioned above.
2. Dry Brush your armpits every morning (after you've cleaned and dried them) which is said to help improve lymph circulation.
3. Make sure to drink a lot of water any time your detoxing and stimulating lymph flow (dry brushing, massage, etc) to help flush the body and avoid getting dehydrated.
4. Give your armpits a facial with a clay mask to remove dead skin cells and access bacteria 2-3 times/week. Use a detox mask you already have or make your own by mixing in a bowl: 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar, 2 tbsp bentonite clay, 1-2 tbsp water, 1 tbsp coconut oil, melted (optional) and 1-2 drops lavender, sweet orange or other essential oil of choice (optional). If consistency is too watery add more bentonite clay.
5. When you're just hanging around the house go au naturel to let the armpits breath.
This process of drawing out built up toxins and impurities will help your underarms naturally reset and find its way back to a healthier place.
Many people have sensitive underarms and react to products containing baking soda. If this is you, avoid using products with baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) until your 30-day detox is complete. If you're armpit masking, and if you shave, mask first. Freshly shaved underarms are more sensitive.
