Spending your paychecks on skin care can sometimes hurt, but hey its an investment!
Your future self with thank you...I promise.
To get the full benefits from your skincare products, It's important to layer products properly so that you're not wasting your time or money. #notaboutthatlife
Did you know skin care products should be applied according to the weight of its formula?
This means lighter products like essences and toners go first, and heavier products, like serum and moisturizers, go last for proper absorption.
But, as if its that simple to follow...we get it!
I wanted to put together a little-numbered guide to simplify this whole process...because I love you xoxo!
1.Cleanse. Without a properly cleansed canvas, your products can't penetrate deep into the skin layers...go figure. Also, If you wear heavy makeup, we HIGHLY recommend double cleansing to properly remove makeup. When it comes to our cleansing routine we always opt for our best face friend. The BFF'sunique high-frequency vibration technology releases blackheads, clogged pores, dirt & oil better than any other method!
2.Tone. Think of toning as balancing the skin. Some cleansers can make the skin more alkaline when in turn you really want your skin to be acidic. The optimal pH of human skin is 5.5 and by toning, you are balancing the PH of your skin to prepare it for what's next to come.
3.Essence (optional). If you have no idea what essence is don't worry you're not alone. This step has been popular in Korean beauty routine's for a while, but its super new to the Western beauty world. Easily confused as a toner, the essence is like a primer that helps the skin to better absorb the other products in your skincare regimen. Essences prep your skin to absorb your next layer of skincare, and lightly hydrate to help your serum and moisturizer sink in. If you’ve ever felt like your moisturizer is just sitting on top of your skin and not dissolving into it, essence will play an important role in your skincare routine.
4. Eye Cream. The eyes are the gateways to the soul and require serious love and attention. Your eye cream is targeted to your specific eye concerns, so using that before moisturizer is important. The eye area is thin so you want to be sure that the eye cream penetrates deeply into the skin to get maximum benefits.
5.Spot Treatment/Pimple patch. All humans walking the earth have experienced a pimple...its life! Having an amazing spot treatment can stop a bad pimple in its tracks, reducing inflammation and killing bacteria. The goal is to get the spot treatment to work directly on the blemish and not have any other product interfere with the performance. If you find it too annoying trying not to smear the spot treatment, you can leave this step to the end! If you pick this route... take a damp cotton swab and wipe the blemish or broken out area to remove the skincare products that were just applied. Apply the spot treatment and let it dry. Done!
6. Serum. A.K.A Concentrated GOLD. Serums are highly concentrated and active; this is why they need to be applied first, to clean skin. This way all the active ingredients can penetrate your skin. There is seriously a targeted serum for every concern: age control, deep wrinkles, firming, hydration, dark spots, contouring, mattifying, brightening and sensitivity...you name it! Just a few drops is all it takes to power-up your beauty routine. Be sure you're using one that caters to your biggest skin care woes to help reach your skin goals.
7.Moisturizer. If I had to pick one product besides cleanser, it would def be a moisturizer. I'm all about that dewy, moisturized, as close-to-baby-skin-as-I-can-get skin. Moisturizers are usually the densest, hence why it's standing at #7.
8.Oil. Not everyone uses a moisturizer + oil, but for those who do...you want to put the oil on last to lock everything in. It’s important to understand that every skin care product has a molecular size. Oil is the largest of all molecules, a moisturizer is smaller, and serum is the smallest. If a skin oil is part of your routine, always use it as the last step over moisturizer.
Tip: “Your skin is incredibly effective at absorbing ingredients,” says Rachel Nazarian, a dermatologist in New York City. “In reality, you don’t need to wait more than a few seconds to rub in a product before you apply something on top of it.”
